A Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) inspection is a “Thorough Examination” required under UK law. Under HSE rules, LOLER inspections must take place every six months for any lifting equipment or accessory used to lift people (like passenger lifts, hoists and cherry pickers) or for all lifting accessories (slings, chains and shackles). They must be carried out every 12 months for all other lifting equipment used only for carrying loads.

Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), anyone who owns, operates or controls work equipment must manage its safety, with inspections mandatory to ensure the equipment is safe, suitable for its purpose and properly maintained. Inspections are triggered when the equipment is first installed, if it is relocated and in exceptional circumstances. Some equipment must have routine checks under PUWER.
